The river has always been here, moving quietly through our days. It has carried goods and people, shaped neighborhoods, erased landmarks, and returned them in different forms. Long before maps gave it a name, and long after industries rose and fell along its banks, the river kept record in its own way.

Stories of the River is a living heritage project devoted to listening.

This project gathers memories, observations, and histories rooted in specific places along the river. A bend in the water where children once swam. A bridge crossed daily without a second thought. A shoreline where work was done, songs were sung, or something was lost during a flood. Each story is anchored to place, allowing geography to guide the narrative rather than chronology alone.

Here, the river is more than backdrop. It is a participant. Floods arrive as turning points. Droughts leave long pauses. Erosion and renewal become a slow, ongoing dialogue between water and land. Personal recollections sit alongside ecological change, revealing how human lives and natural rhythms are inseparable.

Some stories celebrate tradition and continuity. Others surface quieter histories often left unmarked. Indigenous relationships to the river. Labor and industry. Access, exclusion, resilience, and repair. Together, they form a layered account that resists nostalgia while honoring memory.

This is not a finished archive. It is an opening.

Over time, voices will be added. Images will find their pairings. The river will be revisited in different seasons, under different conditions, by different people. The project will grow as rivers do: gradually, unevenly, shaped by what flows into it.

For now, this space holds intention.
